Given that large earthquakes happen so infrequently in Kyushu, it's hardly surprising that many people were unprepared when the Kumamoto Earthquake struck. Living in a country like Japan where natural disasters are common, it's a good idea to be prepared even if you live somewhere that isn't usually affected. These things are often hard to predict and, like those of us affected by the Kumamoto Earthquake, you won't have time to prepare when disaster strikes.
Here is a quick list of some things you might want to consider packing in an emergency 'grab bag' that you can leave near the door of your house, ready to pick up if you need to leave quickly during a disaster.
- Water
- Non-perishable food
- Warming clothing / rain clothing
- Torch and spare batteries
- Medicine / First Aid supplies
- Money / I.D

Kumamoto Castle Before and After the Earthquake - Photographic Special
Kumamoto Castle is the most famous and well known attraction in the city, and receives countless visitors every year. The loss of this top attraction is sure to have an impact on tourism in Kumamoto, especially as it is going to take so long to repair the castle - some sources say up to two decades in order to carefully reconstruct this national treasure, with intricate techniques and specialist skills.
Having lived in the city for nearly a year and a half, I have visited the castle several times and in different seasons, experiencing its beauty the year round. Aside from that, having a great view of the castle from my apartment has given me plenty of opportunities to photograph it. Here is my personal collection of photos of Kumamoto Castle, from both before and after the earthquake.
Please contact me for commercial use of these photos.
Thanks.
