26 Martyrs Museum in Nagasaki

While Nagasaki is most famous for its recent dark history, the city has a wealth of cultural sites that often get overshadowed by the Atomic Bomb museum. We found this little museum quite by chance and it turned out to be one of the most interesting parts of our trip.

In 1597, 26 Catholics were killed in Nagasaki after a gruelling march from Osaka. The youngest amongst them was only 12 years old. Christianity has had a rocky relationship with Japan and the relics in this fascinating museum shed much light on the issue. It's a great little place to visit, especially if you've got an hour to kill before getting the train as it is only a few minutes walk away from the main station.
