Akase - A Short Trip From Kumamoto

Okay, traditionally it isn't beach weather yet - I know that the Japanese tend to only visit the seaside during the summer months - but for a Brit like me, the balmy 29° weather we've been having here in Kumamoto is certainly making me crave a few lazy hours on the beach.

From Kumamoto, the JR Misumi Line runs all the way down to Misumi (another great location) and Akase is about a 40 minute ride from Kumamoto. Getting off the train you'll feel like you are stepping out into the jungle - its wonderfully deserted and great if you need to get away from it all for a couple of hours.

The beach isn't amazing, but it is quiet and almost guaranteed to be empty in the pre-summer months. We visited last Septemeber and had it to ourselves. So if the weather is in your favour and you want an unusual day trip, I recommend Akase. My family and I took the JR Misumi Line during Golden Week and it was running fine - in fact, we were some of the only people on the train!
