After the Kumamoto Castle, Suizenji Koen (Suizenji Park) is the most popular attraction in the city and sees countless visitors every year. Residents were disheartened to hear that Suizenji Koen had been unable to re-open for Golden Week, and even now the pond is not yet back to how it was before (during the earthquake, all the water drained out leaving the pond dry and dismal-looking.)
However, the park has recently opened its doors again and to celebrate the fact, entrance will be free until the end of May to encourage more people to visit. As one of the pricier attractions in the city (but still a very reasonable cost!) now would be a great time to show your support and go visit this much-loved attraction. I'm not sure if the picturesque tea house in the park has reopened too, but if it has, consider spending your entrance fee pennies there instead as the snacks that come with the green tea set are delicious.
