The last major earthquake in Kumamoto happened over 100 years ago - this part of Japan is not known for its natural disasters and so to have such a large earthquake came as a massive shock, if you'll excuse the pun. Including those who died of injuries and illnesses caused by the earthquake (such as Economy Class Syndrome) about 60 people lost their lives in the disaster, which is actually a very small number if you look at the size of the quakes and consider how many people died in the 2011 catastrophe in Tohoku.
I'd been living in Kumamoto for over a year when the earthquake happened and it was my first experience of a serious natural disaster.
