Sakurajima in Kagoshima

Kagoshima, in Southern Kyushu, is most famous for its volcano located on Sakurajima - an island just a short boat ride away from Kagoshima City. If you're looking for somewhere to visit in Kyushu, Kagoshima is a great option for many reasons, not least of these being Sakurajima.

While Kumamoto is still rebuilding and tourist attractions are a little limited at present, trips to places like Kagoshima are a great alternative. As Kagoshima is only an hour away on the train it can certainly be done in a day trip, but I recommend staying for a couple of days because there is a lot to see, particularly if you want to spend a day over on the volcanic island.
