The Kumamoto Castle

Some of the most widely circulated images of the Kumamoto Earthquake are those of the Kumamoto Castle. The most famous attraction in the prefecture and a landmark famous throughout Japan, the castle is one of the most badly hit attractions in the city and it has been said that with the specialist techniques needed to rebuild it and the huge amount of money it will cost, it could take up to 20 years to restore the castle to its former glory.

However, while you cannot currently enter the castle grounds it still makes an interesting visit from the point of dark tourism. The fallen rocks, the debris, the tower naked of its tiles - it all makes for a stunning attraction if you want to see first hand what kind of damage an earthquake can cause. Much of the area is still roped off but there are several points where you can view the damage from a safe distance.
