Heartbreak. One of my favourite places in Kumamoto, completely destroyed. The Teacher Janes Mansion was a museum dedicated to the life of Leroy Lansing Janes, the first Western teacher in Kumamoto. The museum was located in the house where Janes lived - a beautiful colonial style building made for him in the late 1800's.
In the Kumamoto Earthquake, this was one of the victims. The museum was totally destroyed, and it seems very unlikely to me that it will be rebuilt. As much as I loved the museum, it was never really a popular tourist attraction and on the three occasions of my visiting it in 2015, there was usually no-one else there.
